Is Legal Always Ethical: Mobilizing Systems and Taking Creative Action.
As social workers who relentlessly pursue social justice, we explore alternate perspectives for viewing the world, our clients and ourselves. Simultaneously we consider the laws and regulations which define the scope of our work and the unspoken biases that determine options and outcomes. This two-session workshop will address these concerns.
Session one will focus on maintaining our social justice mission in a for-profit world by seeking out and sharing new paradigms that foster hope. Our keynote speaker will clarify the principles of eco psychology’s holistic approach to healing. Practitioners will share innovative strategies for improving social justice aims.
Session two will address how laws/regulation and guidelines reflect social values and impact social services, promoting or impeding social justice. Specific examples will include discussion of the changes in mandatory reporting requirements, Care Court Implementation and process involved in the recent shift in social work curriculum at California State University Long Beach (CSULB) from multiculturalism to critical race theory.
